Member Spotlight November: ORTEC

What is your business industry category or specialty?
ORTEC is a leading provider of advanced analytics and predictive commerce solutions. Our team specializes in helping companies meet Big Data analytics challenges in the areas of fleet routing and dispatch, vehicle and pallet loading, workforce scheduling, demand driven transportation forecasting, dynamic network planning and warehouse control.

How do you describe your job to people outside the industry?
I like to use the Coca-Cola example.  Coke is one of our largest global customers. With 500 brands and thousands of skus, Coke is the world’s largest distribution system. ORTEC has helped Coke get to market more efficiently by optimizing supply chain logistics saving them close to one billion dollars over the last 10 years.

What makes you unique?
The ORTEC solution suite is revolutionizing the way companies see, plan and execute their demand-to-delivery supply chain, in a single model. ORTEC offers the best pure routing algorithms available in the marketplace today. The solution we just implemented for Airgas is years ahead of the curve. It is a powerful approach to control stock and offer greatly enhanced service levels by combining the route scheduling and replenishment solutions. We help many of our customers follow a predictive commerce strategy enabling them to manage market demands, accelerate growth, increase profitability and provide long-term shareholder value.

How was the business started?
ORTEC was founded on April 1, 1981 by five students studying Econometrics at Erasmus University Rotterdam who believed that mathematical theory could be practically applied to accelerate business performance. They shared a missionary zeal to show the world how useful their field could be. In 1981, they worked in shifts on one very large and expensive computer in a windowless one-room office with no heat.  Today, one of those founders, Aart van Beuzekom is Chief Evangelist, Chairman and CEO, leading a global team of more than 700, many with PhD’s in Econometrics and Mathematics, optimizing some of the most iconic businesses in the world including Coca-Cola, Shell and Walmart.  Simply, ORTEC solutions help minimize project risk, moving tribal knowledge into a more measurable and predictable advanced planning and analytics platform.

How many employees does the business have?
We are a global company with over 1,800 customers and 700 employees in every corner of the globe.

How did you end up in Atlanta?
ORTEC enticed me to move to Atlanta. In my role as ORTEC Director of Operations, I traveled frequently to be on site with customers from a home base in California. After being promoted to Chief Operations Officer, my family and I moved to Atlanta which we have really enjoyed. The lifestyle and standard of living are excellent. World-class restaurants, great sports teams, mountains and beaches…there is something for everyone. The world’s busiest airport makes it easy to jet off anywhere, anytime, for work or play.

What is your number one business goal over the next year?
My number one goal is to instill a 360 degree customer centric strategy within ORTEC based on four best practices:
1. Passionately believe the customer always comes first
2. Focus on what the customer wants/needs and develop products/services around that.
3. Build outstanding customer relationships to maximize customer’s product and
service experience.
4.Implement and adhere to a 360 degree customer centric strategy, 24/7.

What is the best advice you have received regarding doing business with the Dutch?
Wear orange.
Seriously, the Dutch are highly educated, direct, trustworthy and a pleasure to do business with.

Any other personal information you would like to share, e.g. hobbies, special interests, family etc…
My wife and I are very dedicated to the environment…eco-awareness and wellness have become a way of life for us. We try to make choices every day that positively impact each other and the environment.  I even taught yoga for a while but as my role has become increasingly global, it’s more likely me practicing poses in a hotel room, solo.
