February Member Spotlight: Cherry Bekaert

What is your business industry category or specialty?

Cherry Bekaert & Holland is specialized in Certified Public Accounting, tax, audit and advisory services.

How do you describe your job to people outside the industry?

We are CPAs and advisors who provide a variety of services to both public and private businesses and their executives. Among the services we provide are: tax returns, accounting services, audits, international tax including in-pat and ex-pat services, transfer pricing, employee benefit plan audits, tax planning and strategy, risk advisory, litigation support, and financial consultation

Who are your main competitors and what differentiates you from the competition? What makes you unique?

Our main competitors are large regional accounting firms. What differentiates Cherry Bekaert is our intentional focus on serving growing, middle-market companies. We take a look at our clients’ big picture and their future potential, offering guidance and advice to help them grow toward their goals. The Firm’s tagline “Your Guide Forward” demonstrates our commitment to playing an active role in helping executives make business decisions both now and in the future as they grow and expand their companies. Additionally, our Atlanta office is home to the Firm’s international tax team – a high-level team of professionals who provide tax planning, strategy, and consultation to clients with a domestic and international presence. These specialists provide clients with tax services tailored to their business goals and international activities, helping them to remain competitive in the global marketplace while ensuring a homegrown prospective on local regulations and tax issues.

How was the business started?

Harry Cherry founded the firm in Wilmington, N.C., in 1947. Soon after, Charlie Bekaert and William Holland joined him to form Cherry, Bekaert & Holland LLP. In 2013, the Firm made a strategic decision to shorten its name to Cherry Bekaert in order to better appeal to growing, global companies.

How many employees does the business have?

Cherry Bekaert has more than 850 associates firm-wide and more than 100 associates in its Atlanta office.

How did you end up in Atlanta?

Because Atlanta has been and continues to be a growing, vibrant city, the Firm opened an office here approximately 15 years ago. We saw a boom particularly in the number of manufacturing and distribution as well as technology companies that were either coming to Atlanta or getting their start here. We therefore wanted to have a local presence to serve these companies with the valuable, necessary services they needed to operate, while providing value-added opportunities they didn’t know existed. We remain heavily focused on serving technology, life sciences, and M&D companies, but as Atlanta continues its impressive transformation into a nationally recognized hub for all businesses, we also serve real estate & construction, healthcare and commercial clients.

What is your number one business goal over the next year?

Growth is always an important goal for Cherry Bekaert. Not only do we aim to help our clients meet their growth goals, we want to grow our business by associate and client numbers. We proactively guide clients forward in ways they never thought possible (tax savings, restructuring, credits and incentives, or identifying opportunities), to help them meet their business objectives. One way in which we work toward our growth goal is by developing mutually beneficial relationships with diverse networking groups and relevant associations in our respective local markets. We also seek out organizations and clients who are driven by innovation. When you can solve clients business needs and connect them with the right resources, it is a win for all involved.
