January’s Member spotlight: Intertrust Group

What is your business industry category or specialty?

The Intertrust Group is a leading global provider of trust and corporate services. We provide specialized administrative services that ensure sound financial administration of companies and that enable our clients to comply with the applicable legal, tax and regulatory regimes. Clients include large corporations, fast-growing companies and funds.

How do you describe your job to people outside the industry?

I am focused on Business Development for the Southeast USA region. I assist both corporation and their legal and tax counsel in facilitating the setup and management of international entities

Who are your main competitors and what differentiates you from the competition? What makes you unique?

We have several competitors, most of which happen to be Dutch. We differentiate from most of our competitors because of our international scope (incl. a US registered agent business), our strong presence in several key countries (i.e. UK, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Shanghai, Singapore, Cayman Islands) and our dedicated business development team in the United States. We are also the only large service provider in our business that is listed (AMX: INTER) and the only one with a Southeast US office (in Atlanta).

How was the business started?

Intertrust was incorporated in 1952 and subsequently was part of a number of large financial institutions, including ABN AMRO and Fortis, until its buy-out in 2010. Blackstone, employees and members of management are the Company’s current (indirect) shareholders. We became a public company in October 2015.

How many employees does the business have?

Intertrust currently has over 1800 employees working from 37 offices in 26 countries. We currently have one employee in Atlanta.

How did you end up in Atlanta?

I moved to Atlanta to work for the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, a Dutch government agency focused on attracting foreign investments to the Netherlands. I was a director in the Atlanta office from 2009 to 2015. In July 2015 I joined the Intertrust Group.

What is your number one business goal over the next year?

An important reason to set up an Atlanta office is to get to the word out regarding our services in the Southeast USA, whether it is by talking to clients directly or to business partners such as law firms and international tax firms. Of course this will hopefully lead to multiple client engagements.

What is the best advice you have received regarding doing business with Americans/Dutch?

Americans do not like to dwell on things, so Dutch ‘directness’ is generally appreciated. In the Southeast it does help to be able to talk about the last (college) football or basketball game.

Any other personal information you would like to share, e.g. hobbies, special interests, family etc…

I am married and live in Candler Park. My wife is currently a student at Georgia State’s LL.M program (for foreign attorneys). If time allows we enjoy exploring the city of Atlanta and its surroundings.
